This is a Black Rat Snake that a friend caught in the Pine Barrrens of New Jersey several weekends ago. It is typical of many that are found there. Unlike obsoleta from other localities that show quite a bit of white and/or distinct blotches, this one has almost no markings and is jet black on both the dorsal and ventral sides. These show some white up under the chin and a few inches back on the dorsal side. To me this is a classic Black Rat and not all that commonly seen. Just thought I'd share! By the way, this animal was released right after the photo was taken.
