And think that there should be stricter rules when it comes to the purchase of these birds...id be happy if it was more like human adoption. I have gotten several "rescue" birds...birds so screwed up from abuse(much of it not intentional)that no one else wants them.....I love Captin Morgan, the orange winged amozon in the last post..hes one of my favorites of the birds i live with....he was rescued out of a mans basement, plucked bald, screaming and just an all around mess.....the man had bought Captin, had not really named him(called him bird), made him much more into a status symbol then anything....and to top it all off he is a wild caught bird(thank god thats outlawed now)..he had to actually be cut out of the small parakeet cage he was in and rushed to the vets.....the picture was taken about a month ago, his feathers are back, hes learning to socilize with me and the flock, and hes actually starting to trust me(something i didnt expect)....hes made a nice turn around...i will never forget the first time he played with a toy, he was so scared of everything....and to see him actally play, well, i have to admit made me tear a tad...*sniffle*..um allergies...ne way....hes on a road to recovery...(...the picture on this post is crash, a millatary macaw, with issues, she attacked the man at the store who used to mistreat her(yell at her, and yes to a parrot that is abuse), and proceded to just about remove his finger.....)....I think to do well with parrots you have to learn thier language of movement and position....You can calm a macaw with a look, and comfort them with a gesture....and if you dont know what your doing you can also scare the crud out of them, and make yourself a threat!)..and it works the other way too...a dialating iris is saying..ill take a chunk outa you....even if there making a cute "come pet me look" (crash is notorious for that one)(so, therefore i cant help it if im a birdbrain;-)
: Any animal that's smart enough to ask to go home and to truely mean it, in my eyes should have their wishes respected.
I agree that these birds would probably be best at home in the wilds were they belong, but what if there are no wilds to return to...For these long lived, and slow reproducing creatures, i think good captive breeding programs, and land conservation are IMPERITIVE for thier survival....
Ill get off the high perch for now....
