I don't know for sure. You are right they look very simular. I looked at several different pics of each, and it appears closer to E. Dione according to Terry Cox. She has more black markings , and almost identical looks to the pic from Terry Cox. http://www.kingsnake.com/forum/garter/messages/8340.html
I looked at another post from Terry
http://www.kingsnake.com/forum/rat/messages/4529.html
that looks ***simular*** but much lighter in base color.
But then there is the Company Hiss N Things http://www.hiss-n-things.com/ that has a "red backed rat snake" that looks identical , and they list the scientific name as Elaphe rufodorsata
which looks like it also.
So another words, terry's pics say its E. Dione, and Hiss N Things says its E. Rufodorsata. I don't REALLy care what it is, I just want to know how to keep it. I tried to feed him a mouse yesterday, and he had NO interest in it. I will continue to try every week.
: I am sure someone else will correct me or back me up, but I don't believe E. dione eat fish.
: Are you sure it isn't "Elaphe" rufodorsata? That is a very similar looking snake that will eat fish (and not mice). Regardless of the species, frozen mice are a better food source that is a lot more convenient and has a much lower chance of passing internal parasites to your snake.
: I belive the thiaminase (the enzyme that breaks down thiamine) problem exists in all fish, by the way, not just goldfish. However, I don't believe it is a problem if you feed live fish, rather than frozen. But, I am sure someone with more specific knowledge on the issue will chime in.
