Hallo Russ
At the time scalaris is considered a member of the Elaphe, but keepers of this lovely snake often consider wheter is should belong to something else because it has some similarities to Pituophis and other species. Try to look at an Arizona elegans and compare.
There are some things that puzzles with scalaris compared to all other european ratsnakes:
Obvious difference in looks
Only partly change in color from juvenile to adult
They likes it very warm
Incubation time shorter
Eggshell thinner
There are more looking on hemipenis strukture and so. All together it might not be an Elaphe at all, but I give a damm It is a very interesting and lovely snake to keep whatever the name should be.
Best wishes
Søe
