In Reply to: rat snake will not eat anything except birds...help posted by joel on July 16, 2001 at 07:03:38:
:Don't kid yourself! A lot of cities or neighborhoods declare themselves bird sanctuaries, but all songbirds are federally protected. I would suggest finding an old or active house(English)sparrow nest(as mentioned, these are not protected), take the whole nest and feed whatever hatchlings are in the nest. Place pinks in the nest for a half hour or so and they will get scented and get some bird dander on them. I will almost guarantee that the snake will take the pinks. Feeding thawed frozen is the best bet. I thaw them in very warm water and that causes the skin to be tougher than if you just let them thaw at room temp and easier for the snake to eat. It also removes some of the rodent smell and makes for easier scenting. Jim
my black rat will only eat birds. i can't get her to eat mice. i have to go out and look for bird nest once a week and take a hatchling. i don't like having to do it and it takes to much time. how can i get her to eat mice?
