In Reply to: Questions about my Black Rat eggs posted by Dave on September 27, 1999 at 09:30:59:
: I have an accidental clutch of black rat eggs. Its been 61 days at about 80 degrees. How much longer do I give them before I give up? Actually I'm in doubt that the temp has stayed consistently at 80, will that affect the time to incubate? I also have two eggs that have displayed a split in the outter egg shell showing an inner membrane. Is that common? I haven't really found much info and would appreciate any ideas. thanks
Looks as though your eggs may be hatching right now. When the babies are about to hatch they will slit the egg open with their egg tooth (a sharp scale on their noses. Then they will stick their heads out for one to two days then craw out of the egg. Your temps seem to be fine, fluctuation in temp is not a big deal unless there is a very large change, like 8-10 deg pluss. If they are not hatching now wait until the eggs are yellow and molded before you give up. If they are still relitively white stick with them. You shouldn't have to wait more than 80 days but I'm sure they'll hatch before then. Good luck!!
