$70 for any captive-produced healthy snake is not too much IMO. Granted, you can probably find them much cheaper than that at a local herp show or on the classifieds here. Black ratsnakes are awesome animals. They do get large, and they can have attitudes but can easily become non-aggressive as they get older. Babies can be biters, but that is normal and not a big deal.

A cool thing about black rats is that if you have a tall cage with a branch in it and a basking spot up high, the snake will likely roost up there some of the time. You don't need any of that, but it makes for a nice display if you choose to go that route.
