My black rat taking a licking but still ticking...

Hi. I am a long time snake fancier but an admitted novice at snake husbandry. Is it normal for my 4.5' wild caught black rat snake to get the crap bit out of him every time I feed him a mouse? Sheez! I wonder how they survive in the wild if they have to actually catch and kill bigger things than mice... i.e. a RAT! I was thinking that with a name like "RAT SNAKE" that it should be able to make short work out of a small mouse.
