: Wow, that is a great story! Hopefully the snake will turn up someday. That really irritates me the way some kids and adults are toward snakes as well as other animals.
: Are you a vetrinarian? The link is to a vetrinarian site.
No I am not a veterinarian. I work at a nature center as a park naturalist and do some wildlife rehabilitation (mainly reptiles and mostly turtles it seems). One of the main jobs I do is to help teach people not to do stupid things like harass animals, but sometimes there is just no getting through to some individuals. However, it is a really good feeling to help someone who is scared or ignorant of a particular kind of critter get over that fear and actually start to revise the way they look at that kind of animal.
The link goes to the Pet Care Forum which is an organization supported by the Veterinary Information Network. VIN is an organization for vets (it is possible that some vets in your area are members of VIN), but the PCF side is open to everyone for the purpose of providing an interactive supportive community for nearly any kind of animal. PCF is similar to kingsnake.com in that there are a few hundred message boards, several chat rooms, online articles & newsletters, etc. There are about a hundred or so hosts who help moderate the forum and assist the members. The complement of PCF hosts comprise a wide spectrum of people from veterinarians to hobbyists, breeders, trainers, handlers, scientists, educators, rescue/rehabbers, published authors, and everyday pet keepers (one does not have to be an expert on an animal to become a host...just have good people skills and a desire to help the online community). PCF recently celebrated their 10th anniversery online, though this is the start of the 2nd year on the web (the site had previously been exclusive to only AOL subscribers)
