Wow, that is a great story! Hopefully the snake will turn up someday. That really irritates me the way some kids and adults are toward snakes as well as other animals. Are you a vetrinarian? The link is to a vetrinarian site.
I used to catch garter and green snakes for my mom. (In my younger years.) I would let them go in her large garden. They seemed to like it because they did'nt leave. (Lot's of insects!) There was an old well that was filled in and an old chicken house in the back that wild black rat snakes lived in.
I don't harm any animal. I was going to be a veterinarian but an accident stopped that. Now I just study and talk to the animals. I know snakes dont have ears but talking sure calms them down like you said. There is a certain wild rabbit and sometimes a granddaddy black rat snake that likes to follow me around.
I live in southern Illinois. Some have said that there isnt many snakes here. Thats strange because so far I've seen lots of black rat snakes, racers, garters, hog nose, greens, copperheads, an eastern rattler just down the road, water snakes, some kings, (yes, I know the correct latin names) and who knows what else is down in the heavy woods beside our house!
Next time I see that black rat snake that came toward me I think I will just let her come and not move away. Who knows maybe she will follow me around too! :)
Oh, I have some pics of the grandaddy black rat snake and a garter if you would like to see them.
