Hi Marcel,
>>>>>I've seen that pic before. I don't recall--but I think you have a website up--Correct? If so, I've been there more than once.
Anyway, That's a FANtastic!-Looking Yellow Rat! I (Like most)prefer the lighter shinier versions over the darker one's. You have my Envy!
: Maybe the reason for this is that they can get huge.
>>>>>>>I really don't think that's it. They get Long, but not really Huge. They are within the size range of many pythons, yet nobody wants the Yellow Rats. There are many colubrids that are in a comparable size range also.
This one is 7' and two inches.
>>>>And a Beauty it IS!
Maybe their temperament is also not one of the greatest.
>>>>>>Oftentimes, its not. As a child, yellow rats were usually Satan Spawn--Biting, striking at the glass continuously, just Very, Very nervous. <--But so were many other local species. I think that had more to do with the "Handling" skills (or maybe I should say LACK of handling skills) of my friends and I. I have owned Yellow rats that were very calm. The last ones I owned several years ago were very calm. They weren't overly keen on handling, but accepted it well-enough, never attempting to bite, musk or anything else. Their offspring weren't aggressive and ultimately were released in a futile effort to A) decrease my work load and B) re-populate "wild" populations (In other words, I couldn't unload them, so I let them go).
Anyway, Texas Rats are oftentimes very aggressive and so are many other colubrids and Boids that maintain a minimum degree of "Popularity".
I hatched some babies this year and last year. From both clutches all babies where extremly aggressive and needed to be tamed down. The adult couple I had where not that aggressive but where very uncomfortable when being handled. The male once showed his discomfort by biting when he was hendled. I also hatched a clutch of taiwan beauties for a friend. None of these snakes every tried to bite or hiss.
>>>>>>>For some reason Yellow Rats have seemed to maintain a "Junk Snake" status. I'll probably never know Why. I guess its kinda like the Folks into Garter & Ribbon snakes-They lik'em, but most everybody sees them as "Junk Snakes." I'm sure they don't really understand it, but if they're happy--More Power to 'em!
>>>>>>>>>Thanks for Your Thoughts! If You have any others--feel free to post them-- I wouldn't mind tossing this around. Mabye there is an answer out there to be found.
>>>>>>Evrglades-Yes!, Yellow Rats-No! Basically the same snake--different color! Makes NO sense!
