: : Something I've always been wondering... How on earth are you supposed to pronounce "Elaphe"? eh-laff, ee-laff, eh-lafe, eh-laff-ee? Just got a pair of radiated rat snakes last Friday and I figured I ought to find out how to pronounce the genus name by now... Thanks.

The dictionary had el in elapid presented the same as el in elbow. To me they seemed to be placing the emphasis on l as el-a-pid.I wish I could hear it pronounced.Could it be el-a-peh-day?Somebody wake up the Academic Forum!
