It is the removal of the gall bladder that kills them, they are cut open while still alive.
There is a white snake that is a natural occurring morph of one of their native snakes. I can't remember which species, but it is protected, and considered sacred by some. Other snakes however do not enjoy this protection in Japan and China.
White snakes are particularly prized, as they believe their parts when eaten result in added benefits compared to the gall bladder of regular snakes, aphrodesiac and longevity are two of them.
The orient provides the primary market for all types of animals that are poached and otherwise uselessly exploited, from the horns of the black rhino to the fins of sharks and the eggs of sea turtles. All of which are consumed in the name of superstition.
