: Yes, there are other snakes that have a trait called "white-sided" that has been proven to be a simple recessive genetic trait in those snakes. KJ's point, and a quite valid one, is that this doesn't have anything to do with whether or not the Everglades white-sided rat snakes carry a simple recessive genetic trait for white-sidedness. Just 'cause it works that way in some other snakes doesn't mean it works that way in Everglades rat sankes, and it is indeed arrogant to assume that it would. As you mentioned, it is also arrogant to assume the opposite. The only reasonable course is to assume neither until it is proven one way or the other. Same kinda thing with cooking, just 'cause most grandmas seem to cook very well doesn't mean that they all can.

First of all, my apologies to all for opening this can of worms. Evidently I do not understand basic Mendelian principles as well as most of the people that frequent this forum. Therefore I can offer no proof that this trait is in fact "genetic," other than the fact that I have five specimens that exhibit this trait and know several persons (3 off the top of my head) who are working with/breeding these animals. Perhaps someone could shed some light on how these animals are produced if this trait is not genetic(I am not trying to argue the fact that it is, I just would like to know how they are produced: incubation temps?, fungus?, diet?, etc? I especially would like to hear your thoughts Mr Alexander) Perhaps this is a type of skin disease that manifests itself in the developing embryos causing the belly and sides to turn white prior to hatching. Again, my apologies to all for my lack of understanding. I hope someone can unravel this mystery for me.
Later,
dg
