: There exists now and have been in the past several snakes from several genera that are fine examples of the trait now coined white-sided (remember the "partial leucistics"?). The point I was trying to make is that with so many snakes from so many differnt genera having demonstrated this trait, why would someone be so quick to insist that the white sided glades rat is not the very same thing when they have no evidence to the contrary. Which is the greater stroke of arrogance, to insist it is, or to insist it isn't when someone else claims it is? As for the analogous relationship between your granny and the argument over white sided glades, you picked a poor analogy. It's relevance is entirely lost on me.
Yes, there are other snakes that have a trait called "white-sided" that has been proven to be a simple recessive genetic trait in those snakes. KJ's point, and a quite valid one, is that this doesn't have anything to do with whether or not the Everglades white-sided rat snakes carry a simple recessive genetic trait for white-sidedness. Just 'cause it works that way in some other snakes doesn't mean it works that way in Everglades rat sankes, and it is indeed arrogant to assume that it would. As you mentioned, it is also arrogant to assume the opposite. The only reasonable course is to assume neither until it is proven one way or the other. Same kinda thing with cooking, just 'cause most grandmas seem to cook very well doesn't mean that they all can.
