: I am in love with wildlife native to ohio. And I would like to focus a collection on them. I have a cali. kingsnake now but that is besides the point. Since I am in college I have limited resourses on pets. I wanted a lizard but a snake would fit my life better. It doesn't need to eat as much. I am looking into either milk or black ratsnakes. I am wondering how big a black rat gets? what you feed it? and minimum tank size? Keep in mind that I like a naturalistic setting so please no sweater box ideas. Thanks
Hello A. Naha:
Black Rat Snakes (Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta) are probably the largest ratsnakes in the U. S., easily growing to lengths of between 6-7' in length. They are very hardy and long-lived. They are mouse and young rat eaters. A 55 gallon tank set up with climbing branches and hiding areas would make a nice home for one or two of them. Hope this info helps. Good Luck!!!
