: : I put my adult pair of E.p.coxi down for brumation just over 4 weeks ago, and no matter when I check on them, they are active. I've checked them late at night when room temp was near 47, and midday when temps are around 62, one or both of them seem to be moving. I've wondered if they were hungry but they were VERY well fed and had 3 weeks to clean out thier gut. Anybody else experience this? Do you think they are cooling enough? Also the male went through a complete shed cycle in a little over a week. Seems awfully fast for a brumating snake. An input would be appreciated. Don

: Hi Don,
: mine are at about 50-55 at night and 60 mid-day, and I do see them out quite a lot, but not all the time. They aren't really moving a lot, just "out", ya' know ?!
: Remember they are a montane species and they really like cool temps. I don't let them get above 75 even in mid summer. I've talked to a couple that keep them even at 80+, but I wouldn't.

Hi Don,
I give all my snakes 4 weeks to clean out their systems before cooling them. I put my coxi down the 15th of november and have only observed the female out of hiding once and that was in the beginning of cooling. The temps are in the high 40's to low 50's. I check on them once a week and they both are always nestled under the spagnum moss inside a dish. They don't even move when I pull back the moss and they both are unable to fully extend their tongues. They are very cold to the touch and do not move. Being from a cooler climate, I believe that being this cool does not hurt them at all and actually helps to maintain thier body weight. I usually have most of my kings and milks lose 3-5 grams(more if they shed)of body weight over a 4 month peroid of not eating with 3 of those months being in cool down. My kings, milks, and rats cool at 50-55.
I also keep my coxi cool during the spring and summer months with them never getting above 78 and usually stay between 68-75 cool to hot end. The eat good, digest good, and are active.
