...I kept my baby mandarins in gallon jars, with a smaller jar for water inserted, and I surrounded the water jar with paper towels. They have done fine, and grew to about 2 feet their first year. I keep them inside a book shelf, so part of the jar is always dark. They are secretive during the day, but come out after dark. One just ate a fuzzy, and I've been watching it. I do spray them occasionally, and keep the room temps bt. 68 and 78* F. I don't give any additional heating.
I agree with Mike, also, that they can be kept on aspen bedding. After the first year I keep mine in ten gallon tanks, with plastic hides full of paper towells, gal. water jug, and aspen shavings about 3 or 4 inches deep. I occasionally spray the aspen. The snakes usually hide in the plastic hides with towelling, but roam and burrow in the aspen at night. I separate them for feeding when they have this setup.
At first they are pretty squirmy, but with regular handling and TLC, they tame down pretty well. They are very interesting and gorgeous snakes.
