: Currently I keep several species of boa and have no experience with ratsnakes. I was thinking of adding a mandarin ratsnake or blue beauty to my collection. Any info on the care and disposition of these animals would be greatly appreciated.

I currently keep and breed mandarins, and I have kept and bred blue beauties in the past also. Their care is pretty basic. Blue Beauties can be kept with a 75-85 degree temperature range, normal household humidity levels are OK. They can be tamed very easily if purchased young, but untamed blues will bite viciously most of the time. Mandarin ratsnakes should be kept between 65-80 degrees, preferrably 78 and under. They're are quite timid and shy so they need plenty of privacy. Paper substrate with 2 or 3 hiding places is good, but about 3-4 inch deep aspen mulch is much better. Aspen allows them to tunnel, it holds the shape of the tunnels without collapsing. Mine love to spend time in covered dishes filled with damp moss. They're wonderful, beautiful, little snakes and well worth the fairly high price they command.
