: I had some of these offered to me in a trade deal. I would like to here the history on them.

Hi Jon,
This morph originated from a wild caught female from near the Fort Myers, Florida area. It was acquired by Chris McQuade of Gulf Coast Reptiles, who is responsible for establishing the line. I first saw them in Tampa at the F.I.R.S. in 1997, but I don't know how long they had been around prior to that. You can contact Mr McQuade for more information, my info is based on bits and pieces from conversations with him and Sheila.

:Are there any problems such as the ones we see in the lue Texas rats, bug eyes, kinked spines etc..

This was my first year to produce them, out of 27 whitesided babies, none had any noticeable defects. I also produced 10 hets, which also did not have any noticeable defects. As this morph begins to gain some popularity, perhaps any hidden defects will surface.

: I have only seen photos of the babies, do they look as striking when they are adults

I will try to post a pic of an adult, the pic above is a hatchling. Most adults I have seen were less than spectacular, compared to the licorice stick rats. This is probably why baby whitesided everglades sell for $100, and the licorice sticks sell for alot more.

:And last but not least, what does everybody think of them(compared to the white sided black rat).

Most white sided everglades (also called 'Ghost glades') are not quite as clean as the licorice stick black rats. By this I am referring to the dirty brown speckling on the sides and the suffusion of yellow in the "white". Some of the nicest ghost glades come close, but most are simply yellowish snakes with brown speckling. Perhaps if someone were to selectively breed the ones with the whitest sides......

Hope this helps,
dg
