I just found your question so I hope you are doing fine with your snakes. The issue with your animals is a matter of convenience for you and inconvenience for your snakes. All snakes seem to desire their own space. They only gather together in nature to mate and to hibernate. I have kept snakes for many years and never found a happy snake that had a roommate. All my snakes have been much happier alone like in the wild. I do not think your big plains rat will eat the smaller one if your feeding your pets correctly. In any case, give it a try if you want to. Some rat snakes do seem to get along with eachother such as the yellow rat. A pair can be kept together but need separation at feeding time and there will be a time in the year when they become sexually active and then you might have babies or a problem. For the most part snakes seem to develope better if caged alone. I know this means you may have to get another house for your other snake but if you want to be happy, then keep them happy.
