Get a thermometer and measure the temperature of the substrate in its hide box and other places in the cage. Then measure the water temperature. It may be that the water was the only comfortable place.
Also, be aware that the need for security will often cause a snake to coil in a water bowl if the hide box is too warm, even if there are cooler open areas of the cage available. Get the heat pad away from the hide box and see if this changes the behavior.
