My first impression is that your primary challenge would be to ensure the snake stayed where you wanted it. It is true that rat snakes frequent houses. In fact, that's how I got my black rat snake...my oldest son saw it slithering up the carpeted steps toward the living room. I didn't capture it...it moved in with me!
However, a snake will only stick around as long as it's food supply exists. Also, other factors influence it's willingness to hang around, such as the amount of general commotion in your house. Other animals, such as a dog, may make the snake reluctant to stay. In other words, even if the food supply is there, the snake may seek elsewhere if it doesn't feel safe.
My advice would be to get some cats. I used to live near a corn field and the field mice were a problem until we got a few cats. The problem diminished to zero in one or two seasons.
: Greetings,
: What a great site ! I'm glad I stumbled upon it....I live in Northeastern Georgia ( Snellville ) and we have a rodent problem - specifically, they are enjoying life in the suspended ceiling of my home office. I have tried Havahart traps ( they aren't interested ) , as well as the more unpleasant traps/ glueboards, with limited success. Would it make sense for me to purchase a rat snake or a corn snake to use as an on site rat manager ?
