I have seen your posts in other forums as well. It sounds to me like you KNOW you should get a Corn, but you really WANT something a little less ordinary. I totally understand how you feel. I have owned both Corns and Taiwans. Although Taiwans are a good snake I really wouldn't recommend them for beginners as the young are often nippy and they get HUGE as adults. However, I have a suggestion that you might like: The Eastern Fox Snake (Elaphe vulpina gloydi). These are probably the most often over-looked pet snake. I know people that claim they handle even better than Corns although in my personal experience they are very similar. They are also very hardy, moderatly sized, and fairly uncommon. In addition, they are very beautiful and unlike many snakes, they get more beautiful as they get older. I also think that soon they will be protected which will make them even more scarce in the pet herp trade. I just saw that Glades Herp just got several captive born neonates in....you may want to check them out.
