I've gotten a few clutches from wc imports and was able to hatch some out as well. They breed year round but keeping wc imports healthy long term is the challenge! They are extremely vulnerable to upper respiratory infections..some that kill in 48 hrs. and some that were successfully treated. I feel a drier cliamate will reduce the UR risk but lessens the chances of copulation. I never saw mine breed but the cage looked like a storm had passed through the next morning!
Gravid females are easy to identify - initially the swelling looks like a hematoma then, as the rest of the eggs develop, they look like any other gravid snake.
Incubation is tricky! 84-86F - and manually pip the eggs at 100 days. Even w/this I had two die full term in the egg even though their clutch mates had successfully exited the same day.
The cb neonates are very easy to care for - just like any other Colubrid - aggressive feeders and fast growers - though they are just as nippy as the imported adults. They do produce clutches year 'round and it pays to keep a close eye on them as I did have one clutch laid while I was out of town and I lost them - and I did'nt even know she was gravid! Keep in mind these were imported adults - and trust me, they rank right up there as the meanest of all snakes - I kept mine in vertical cages w/lots of fake plants and fed them directly w/tongs so as to minimize the frequent bloodlettings when I tried other means. needless to say handling of these gems was at a minimum!
