bairds rat snake

when we pick up our rat snake it sometimes secretes a white substance from it's rear end. does anyone know what this means? or if it is harmful? we had the snake without prior knowledge of it's upbringing, and have had him for about 3 months(he has been sexed by a reputable pet shop owner).
