In Reply to: Eurasian rats @ IRBA !!!..... posted by Ray Reyes on July 24, 2000 at 00:47:44:
Hi Ray,
I have a trio of Kunishiri and they seem to have two distinct traits. The first is that they rarely (meaning never!) bite or musk you,
as many other rats do. They are kind of flighty though. Mine receive an average amount of handling and they still just
want to flee. The other thing I've noticed is that they tend to go off feed for long periods of time, then they will eat
voraciously for the next several months. My trio ranges in age from 2 to 4, and I haven't attempted breeding yet, although
they were cooled last year. The male (2 years) wouldn't eat for several months this spring, and now eats regularly. If I feed
him a mouse a week, he'll eat every week. If I feed him two mice, he will wait a few weeks before eating again. Currently,
one of my females is fasting. She's got great body weight, so I'm not too concerned, although I'd prefer to feed her lots before
the fall. Has anyone else noticed peculiar feeding behaviors with captive Kunishiri?
My three were all sold as "Kunishiri" so I assumed they would grow into nice blue-green adults. However, they all look drastically
different. The male has lots of yellow, and yellow-green. Very striking! One female is a beautiful shade of turquoise, with no
yellow at all. The other female is rather drab. She is very dark, with flecks of yellow-green. Perhaps more like what a typical
Japanese rat would look like?
Enjoy your new pets!

: Today I went to the IRBA show in San Diego, where I saw
: creatures great and small, sweet and cunning! One really
: neat thing however, was that there were actually a few Eurasian ratsnakes! I saw two male Kunasir Is. ratsnakes,
: two female Korean ratsnakes, a two Leopard ratsnakes and an adult Russian ratsnake! I just couldn't resist and Brought home
: a beautiful male Kunishiri from High Sierra Reptiles! I was thinking of getting one of the Koreans but the buy who showed them to me handled them ruthlessly, ripping the deli cup of the tape that was holding them. One even raced out her cup and got stuck on the tape! He pulled it off not so gently. Anyways, I'd
: like anyone to respond who has worked with Kunishiri! I'll try to post a pic
: Thanks for Reading...
