eye problem caused by mites?

Hi!
I'm usually in the corn snake forum, but I need help with my yellow rat snake.
I just got him from a breeder; I traded a sulcata tort for him and a pair of pueblans. I have always considered myself lucky because I never had any mite problems. Now the yellow has something wrong with his eyes, and I think it may be caused by mites. His eyes appear to be sunken in, and the area around them seems to be elevated, like it's sticking out from the eye. I fancy I can see little bugs in there between his eyes and the surrounding scales. I read that mites will go into this space, and I fear that they might be causing this problem. The only enigma is that I haven't seen any mites on any of my snakes, or in the cages. I find this quite odd, as the information that I have seen states that mites would be clearly seen.

Anyways, I need to know how to treat a mite infestation. I heard that No Pest Strips work well. I also read that they should never be used; they cause cancer or something. What about products designed to kill fleas and ticks. They should also work on other external parasites, right? Would it be safe to put a piece of a cat flea collar in the snake’s cage (inside something so that the snake cannot come into contact with it)? Are there any other products that DO work?

Also, how do I get the mites off of his eye? I know that when a dog gets a tick, putting Vaseline on it will make it be unable to breathe, so it will leave. Would it be okay to put Vaseline around the edges of the eye? Or would that irritate the eye? I suppose that the eye cap would prevent that from bothering the snake, but what do I know? I’m not a herpetologist. If the Vaseline thing wouldn’t work, what about flushing it out with water?

Sorry for all the daft questions. LOL I’m not too good on the health stuff. Thanks for reading this, and any suggestions will be appreciated.
thanx

(I'm going to post this on the general snake forum as well)
