typically yes the everglades has a red tongue and the yellow rat has a black tongue. they intergrade over a large area of Florida, especially around lake Okechobee. The integrades can have either color tongue or even a part black part red tongue.
...so it's hard to be sure. most likely what you have is at least mostly everglades. the integrades are kind of "beigey" or tan or somewhere beteween orange and yellow. a pure everglades should be bright orange with FAINT black stripes. (as an adult)the yellows have DARK black stripes. both are good pets. regardless, it sounds like your snake is from South Florida and should be pretty.
