Hello Don,
I have been wondering the same thing about the leucistic black rats myself, ever since I saw a trio of them for sale in 1997 at the Tampa show. How can a person be sure they are getting pure black rats? Many will say that the leucistic black rats are much more docile than the texas rats, but that can hardly be the only method of proof. I have hatched several clutches of leucistic texas rats and most if not all were no more aggressive than any other subspecies of obsoleta. Almost all of them, black, grey, yellow, everglades, etc. are quite nippy right out of the egg, texas rats just seem to get most of the credit. Almost all tame down rather quickly with time and some handling, some quicker than others. But to base temperment as the determining factor of whether a leucistic individual is either e. o. obsoleta or e. o. lindheimeri seems ridiculous to me. Like you Don, I would like to know if there is a reliable way to identify these specimens.
One possible way would be to acquire a "leucistic black rat" and breed it to both a normal black rat and a normal texas rat to see what the babies look like. Although this may not be the best way, right now it is the only way I can think of to know for sure.
Take care Don,
dg
