Don't worry, it's not a mutant rattler! When rat snakes are small they rattle like that to scare away predators (and reaching in to pick it up, that's what you seem like). The one's I've had all go through this "everything wants to eat me stage" but once they get some size on them, they tend to calm down. A small rat snake will barely break the skin if it does get a grip on you, so you are much more of a threat to it than it is to you. Black Rat snakes make good pets if you decide to keep the one you rescued. It's neat to watch them get darker as they grow too. After a couple of years, it will probably be almost all black and the markings will fade into the background.
