Jan, from my experience in the U. P. of Michigan, the northern part of their range, they inhabit rodent burrows a lot. Sometimes they are active only from late May until September. They also occur near water, streams, etc, and sometimes bask. They'll eat just about any kind of rodent, up to and including rabbits and squirrels, esp. ground squirrels. They come out after rains and like the later afternoon. Moisture and humidity help with activity and feeding, reproduction, etc, as far as I can tell. Young may feed on frogs, and others may also include birds and eggs. Good luck. TC.
