You may find this interesting, and I'm wondering if anybody else has had a similar experience. Last night I was bitten by my CB 99 female Western Hognose. I've been bitten by her in the past, and have had a slight reaction.
Both times she bit me previously, I experienced some localized itching which lasted for maybe 10-15 minutes. Last night however, the response was different. About 10 minutes after she finally let go of my right index finger, my right wrist started to get itchy. Shortly, my left wrist was also itchy. I suspected that it was caused by the bite, but didn't get too worried about it.
I woke up about 3 AM with tremendous itching in various areas of my body, especially the backs of my legs. By 5.45 AM, I was on the way to the hospital with huge itching welts on the backs of my thighs and butt, my wrists, tops of my feet, and arms. I was given 50 mg injection of benadryl for an allergic reaction and got immediate relief from the itching. I've never heard of that happening from a hognose, and presume that some protein in the saliva, maybe, but not necessarily originating in the Duvernoy's gland, caused the reaction.
The hognose appears not to have suffered from tasting my blood!
