:Most ratsnakes have a pattern which could could be construed as camoflauge. But the pattern on mandarins seems to scream- here I am! How does being dressed like a bumblebee help them survive? Is there a bright yellow and black cobra in China? Do they live somewhere with neon colored rocks? Just wonderin'
:And yes, I've got one around my wrist right now :D.
Maybe it isn't a matter of camouflage...but a matter of breaking up an image with the pattern, or that the neon EYE like pattern startles predators. Maybe the predators aren't able to see color? Maybe it is more a matter of the color not causing their death rather than one of it totally helping them to live. Like you say, it obviously works.
