:i have a juvenile Texas Rat that hasn't been eating well on his own for a while now. this past weekend, i force fed him 5 pinkies and so far he's fine. when you have to force feed, how long should you do it? should i give him a little while and then try to let him eat on his own? earlier, i tried putting him in a small container alone with a pinky, but no luck. when i force feed, i hold him very gently with one hand and rub the pinky lightly on his nose with the other. after a few seconds, he usually opens his mouth and grabs the pinky. then, i slowly set him down and let go so he can finish eating.
If you are doing as you describe, without forcing his mouth open or working the pink down for him (or pushing it in) I would more call this tease feeding than force. Yes, it is likely stressful to some degree. But, I have a BRB that only ate if I held her in one hand and let her take it....with the nose rubbing, from the other. Then she would swallow and all on her own. She weaned from that to dangling now. I would, if I were you. Work with not holding his head and try just the teasing on his nose. Once he'll take that way then work to trying it without picking him up and then to just dangling it.
