In "Snakes of United States and Canada - Keeping Them Healthy in Captivity - Vol. 2" by Rossi and Rossi they recommend communal brumation due to probabilities of late fall early spring mating. This makes sense due to the prevalence of communal dens in parts of the SW.
I used to exchange e-mails with a guy who bred quite a few of these but we've lost touch. I think he used the same method.
And for what it is worth I've seen little mating activity from snakes who shed quickly during post-brumation.
