In the end, this episode got kind of weird. The male started acting pretty stressed and started dragging her around the cage backwards. At times about an inch of insides (about the width of my thumb) were visible outside his cloaca. I was getting concerned that he'd get aspen up inside or injure himself some other way. I finally placed them in the water dish for a few moments to see if that might at least relax him. About 10 minutes later, they uncoupled and seem fine now. I wouldn't have tried any intervention at all if they were just staying together but this seemed to be more. Hopefully, all is well.
The other point I find interesting is that I house them together and didn't brumate them. I wasn't concerned if they bred this year but I was curious nonetheless. I'll be anxious to see what happens over the next few weeks.
