i have a heating pad, maybe i'll switch to that.
as for UV... i've heard so many things on this, i think i'll keep it just for my peace of mind (out of curiosity, why don't snakes need UV? is it a vitamin D issue?) besides, i think he likes it :-) also his tank is next to the window, and when i open the curtains he comes to the top and starts poking around- i guess the light makes him feel more active or something.

: First you need to get a good thermometer, so you will know exactly what the temperature is. I like to keep the warmest area of the cage in the low 80's.
: Personally, I would use an undertank heating pad rather than the heat lamp for this species.
: As far as the UV lamp, you can use either one if it makes you feel better, but snakes do not require UV light at all.
