This supports my theory that black color of the obsoletta is in fact red and black pigment, the red is just not visible in black animals. Those KY snakes let some of the red show up. An obsoletta born without the black pigment should be red in color and might darken to a deeper red with age, rather than turn white as the Leucistic TX rats do.
:Yes, thats a fairly common trait to show up with this locality. I would say maybe one in ten will have some reddish coloration. These are common snakes in this area, so they occur frequently.
