Well they would probably produce some pretty nice KY locale black rats!!
Yep, once they start eating, they will eat better than any snake Ive owned! Mine has really put on the girth in the last few months. He grew really fast length wise, and was so skinney for a while, typical rat snake. But now he has started to fill out and is still getting longer! Hope he will be a good sized black rat.
On the money issue, I wouldnt sell them either, just give em away or release them. But it would be fun seeing what kind of colors and patterns would turn out. They are just so variable, thats what makes these so nice.

:Brian,
:Now that i think about it...the guy who gave me the snake said it was caught in Spencer County, which is just east of Bullitt county if i'm not mistaken. I don't live in Kentucky, actually i just go down to visit(and snake hunt) a lot during the warmer months. I'm pretty much the guy anybody calls on to ID a snake or catch one. One of my grandpa's friends caught my snake and remembered that i liked them, so he brought it to me. I don't know how old it was when i got it but it looked to be right out of the egg, it was so small. Maybe we can talk more about breeding when i get her up to size. For a long time, she just didn't want to eat, so she didn't grow very much. Now she sucks down anything i give here and she's starting to fill in and get longer. I don't think the breeding will bring in a whole lot of money, but that takes the fun out of it anyway.

:: Your female could be a clutchmate to my male! Mine looked the same as a hatchling. I measured mine back in November. He was 16 months old and was 39". He is an '01 snake that Ive had since he was maybe a week old. Had his first shed just a few days after I got him. I really like the colors of these snakes, just another awesome color scheme by Mother Nature!!
:: Where was yours caught? Mine came out of Shepardsville, Bulitt county.
:: I wouldnt mind loaning mine to you if you wanted to breed them sometime. There is not a big demand for the KY locale black rats that Im aware of, but Im sure there are a couple people here that wouldnt mind getting one. Phil Peak or Terry or maybe Dwight. Guys?

:::Last fall i was given a wc black rat from Ky that looks exactly like yours. It was only a hatchling at the time and is about 30 inches right now. She is just now starting to put on weight, for a long time she was really skinny. The colors are exact to yours. They definitely look different from other black rats i've seen. I will try to get a recent picture up soon but in the mean time, here is a bad old pic from last fall when i first got her. Maybe we can meet up some time and do some breeding sometime.
:::Talk to you later,
:::Kyle
