Karen:
My first question is just how did you come to find out your snakes had 3-4 layers of unshedded shin underneath? If you've had them for as long a time as you say, this can't be possible if they shed on a "regular" basis. Goynosomas have an extremely long shed cycle - 4-5 weeks from the beginning to final shed. If they have the "layers" you describe this would indicate they've rarely shed since you've had them.
Recently I've gone round -n-round with others as to just how to keep these snakes. Please describe the temps./humidities you are currently keeping them at - I'm guessing app. 85% humidity and 88F in temp? Won't work long term in a captive environment. As far as parasites: WC Goynosomas require treatment on a bi-weekly basis for at least three months before you can be semi-assured of getting control. A twoweek break w/in this period is advisable. Long term survival demands temps of 85F max. to 78F min in an arboreal set-up with the higher temps. obviously near the top. Mine could most often be found in the hide boxes nearer the bottom of the cage at the cooler of the extremes. Usually in one out of three sheds I would have to soak them for an hour or so in a shoebox - then manually shed them - especially as they seem to have eye-cap shedding problems. This serves another purpose as it really helped to tame them down. Higher humidities will help in shedding but result often times if upper respiratory problems. Increase humidities on a limited basis when the males are introduced to the females for breeding. You will know if they are amorous if the cage has been torn to hell in the morning! Hope this helps - drop me a note if you need more info - Hey AJ! Thanks for boarding the Baja for me!! Bill
