not at all...:) I'm a sucker for animals in need...always have been.
Over a year ago we had a small, dingy petstore here and they had this pretty, very light colored, WC Ball python that they bought at a show.
He was in a 10 gallon, no light, no heat, no hide, no clean water...she said he wasn't for sale until he would eat...i thought to myself, fat chance, under these circumstances...
A little while later the store closed down, and the people now sell reptiles at the local fleamarket on the weekends...sigh.
So i happend to be at the fleamarket one VERY COLD weekend around xmas last year...and there was that poor snake, still no hide, heat or anything. The "lady" asked me if i wanted him, and told me he never did eat anything...So i got him for $10 and hightailed home, to set this poor baby up with some heat and a hide and all of that, in quaranteen, of course. A couple weeks later i noticed he had blisters all over...and i didn't keep him "moist", he was on papertowels. So to the vet we went. It was determined that he was extrememly full of Giardia and that the blisters were a secondary infection from his weakened immunsystem. So we got shots for the bacteria on the skin, flagyl for the giardia and panacure for worms.
The vet said, the snake would most likely not make it, and not to get my hopes up. That only made me more determined, though. Soon after treatment he shed, and started looking 100% better. He did start eating live small gerbils (tried every way with rats and mice, no luck), and eventually i got him switched to prekilled gerbils, then thawed out gerbils, then pre-killed rats...he did SOOO well...
Then he started to refuse feeding again...after waiting him out some...and him even refusing gerbils eventually, i decided to take him back to the vet. The giardia had come back...sigh. On the other hand the vet said, he could not believe how great the snake looked and how well he was, aside from the giardia. So i treated once again, and was instructed to repeat the treatment 3 month later and to have him tested 3 month after that.
Right now he is eating once again, first live tiny gerbils, just yesterday a big prekilled one....so we are on the road to switch over to rats eventually and hopefully will get all his problems under control...whew.
All that for a little "worthless" WC Ball Python.
And here he is...
now don't even get me started on how much money i spent on Vets and treatments for the golden greek tortoise i rescued...siiigh
ps. i'm german, so excuse the spelling and grammar
