Chris has a pretty good answer. I've always had some problems sexing Russians, and have found them to be one of the most difficult Asians to tell apart by looking at. I've done probing when concerned about the sexes, but never before getting past the first winter (don't like to probe snakes that small). Even at two yrs. of age they look almost identical and need to be probed to be accurate. And with probing there's some degree of error, depending who's doing it.
Russians should have a dbl. row of scales on the tail, below vent. Sometimes one will have a few scales that are singe, but the whole length of the tail is unusual, I think. Can't use it for sexing, but can use it to tell snakes apart. Good luck.
