:Hi,
:I have two Russian Ratsnake babies, a male and a female, and I read on an internet site that sometimes you can tell the sex by the tail length and the degree of angle from the vent to the end of the tail. I looked at both of my snakes and really didn't notice much difference in length or angle. I did notice one difference though. One of the snakes has a single row of ventral scales from the vent to the end of the tail. The other one has double ventral scales, looking almost like a braided pattern, from the vent to the end of the tail. Is this an indicator? I was hoping perhaps one of you folks that have bred these snakes might know. Thanks for your help.
The difference in tail length and shape is usually more evident in adult colubrids. The only reliable methods to determine the sex of a hatchling are probing and popping. (I prefer probing)
Both of these methods can cause damage to the snake if done incorrectly. If possible, find someone in your area with experience to teach you these techniques before trying them for the first time.
Good luck,
Chris
