Sounds to me like he's got some Rattlesnake blood in him as well. Have you checked for fangs? That's why you shouldn't buy hybrid snakes. You never know what you're getting...
In all seriousness, tail vibration is a typical defense response in many North American colubrids. It is employed when the snake feels threatened and serves to either simply make a startling noise or mimic the sound of a rattlesnake. Just think of it as an indication that the snake is getting PO'd and should be treated gently. It is generally thought that the more you handle a snake, the tamer they become, but you never know with those hybrids...
