While its true the northern subspecies, E.o.obseleta has been recorded at larger sizes than the more southern forms such as yellow and gray rats. I'm not sure if like eastern milks, the largest black rats are from the northern part of the range.
A friend of mine in Pennsylvania recorded a wild specimen that was 7'-4".
In Kentucky, I have seen plenty in the 6' range, with the largest approaching 7'.
