Background colour of the hatchling black rat, is usually either a rather dirty grey, or a shade of tan. Background of the grey rat, is a clean silvery grey. The head colour of the grey is definitely grey, lighter than that of the black, and it shows less contrast between the head markings and the background, than does the black. The saddles of the grey are usually more widely-spaced and fewer than those of the black. Seen side-by-side, it isn't hard to tell them apart.
