This was posted on the Cornsnake forum earlier, but I thought I'd try here as well...
I was just given a hatchling ratsnake, and cannot tell if it is going to be a gray ratsnake or a black ratsnake. The juveniles seem identical in both species. My benefactors don't have the parents or knowledge of the heritage of the snake (it may have been WC, but it would have had to be recently).
It's light gray with black saddles, each one of which has an almost imperceptible outline of lighter gray scales (almost white). Beautiful snake. I don't have a digital camera right now though, so no pics available.
Voracious eater, and not afraid of me in the least, though non aggressive towards me. It ate 3 f/t large pinkies today before I cut it off. It eats like a pig despite the new environment.
Anyway, is there any way to tell besides waiting 'til it grows up?
