In Reply to: Rat Snakes are Constrictors, Aren't they?? posted by supermanbp99 on October 18, 2002 at 00:45:46:
Yep Normal behavior. A pinkie does not present a threat to the snake, therefore the snake doesnt need to constrict and kill it before eating. Snakes will only constrict a prey item that can do physical harm to it if eaten alive. That is why if you watch a garter or hognose eat a toad frog, they will just grab them and once positioned, will eat the toad alive. Some snakes however will always constrict prey. My California Kingsnake will always constrict its food item. Even though I feed it prekilled mice, while my rat snake will just grab the mouse and swallow with no constriction. I think it just depends on the snake. But on pinkies I have never seen a snake constrict them, doesnt mean it hasnt happened, I have never seen it. So your snake is pretty normal. Hope this helps.

: I may be causing myself to appear ignorant, but I need some clarification on this matter. I was under the impression that rat snakes kill by constricting prey.In fact, I watched an older rat snake aggressively constrict a rat at the store where I bought my snake. However, my baby texas rat snake (which I have fed twice now) makes no attempt whatsoever to constrict its meals. It just "strolls" on up to the pinkie and commences swallowing. Is this normal feeding behavior for baby rat snakes? Whatthehell? Thanks!
