As a point of curiosity, would you care to mention who these "serious herpetologist" are who refuse to recognize the validity of KE's obseleta? To my knowlege, it has not been a point of discussion, as few persons in the field have first hand knowledge of their existence. I know of no one in fact, with the exception of yourself that has formed such an opinion. This makes that aspect a moot topic for the present.
In addition, as Dwight clearly pointed out, DNA testing would have no significance in determining locality of these obseleta's. This is widely known, one only has to review the literature.
Escaped pets or wild specimens crossed with known genetic mutations? Hardly. Some of these traits have never been seen before in obseleta. Could you be confusing the present subject with the myriad of corn snake mutations?
Has it occured to you, that the plethora of abberant snakes available in the trade all had their beginnings somewhere with a natually occuring snake from some state, in some county? Why do you find it so impossible that in this instance, this could occur in Jefferson county Ky?
